King Abdulaziz University has often been referred to as one of the top schools in Saudi Arabia. In 2019, Times Higher Education ranked them #1 on their list of Arab Universities. The school was initially founded as a private university in the 1960’s, but this later changed in 1974 after King Faisal issued orders to convert it. KAU has been ranked as high as #110 in US News & World Report’s list of Best Global Universities. Now, international students can receive King Abdulaziz University scholarships to help fund their studies.
KAU is one of the largest universities in the world, with a massive population of 180,212 students in total. A great portion of these students are also from international locations, making this one of the world’s most diverse universities. Additionally, a surprisingly small amount of just 4,000 administrative staff teach the school, for about a 40:1 student to faculty ratio.
The school offers over 30 different departments of study, such as the Department of the Faculty of Law, the renowned Departments of the Faculty of Economics and Administration (one of the top business schools in the world, as it was accredited by the AACSB). These departments are scattered throughout roughly 20 different faculties (Faculty of Nursing, Meteorology, Tourism, Medicine, etc) and two colleges (College of Earth Sciences & College of Marine Sciences). King Abdulaziz University is contained in one main campus in Jeddah, Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
One of the country’s highest endowments belongs to KAU, with a fantastic $1 billion USD annually. A great portion more is spent on research, with focuses on mainly science, and even more specifically research on advanced materials. Another part of the money goes to King Abdulaziz University scholarships for international students to attract highly qualified minds to research and study.
The fantastic academic departments at KAU have led to instant success upon graduation. Alumni have gone on to politics, business, and more. Graduated figures include Saudi billionaires Sulaiman Abdul Aziz Al Rajhi (economist) and Adel Fakeih (engineer), as well as Nahed Taher (founder of Gulf One Investment Bank and was ranked by Forbes on the list of 100 Most Powerful Women in the World of 2006).
