Ohio State University, a public residential university in Columbus Ohio, was founded in 1870. It was the ninth university founded in Ohio as a result of the Morrill Act of 1862 along with a land-grant, and was originally known as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. This was changed by Rutherford B. Hayes in 1878, when it was changed to its’ current name. Ohio State is ranked 54th on US News & World Report’s list of National Universities. The school boasts the third-largest university campus in the United States, with 59,000 students on the main campus (66,000 in total). That figure includes 46,000 undergrads and 13,000 graduate students. There are 6,200 teachers that work with 22,000 academic staff, for a student to faculty ratio of 19:1.

Ohio State boasts almost 300 different academic departments, which include Urban Arts, Radiology, Biostatistics, and much more. These departments are split into sixteen different schools and colleges, which are split even further into six campuses. The six Ohio campuses are located in Columbus (main), Lima, Mansfield, Wooster, Newark, and Marion.

Ohio had an endowment of $3.579 billion USD in 2016. The school has consistently spent over $650 million USD every single year towards research, which is the 11th highest amount in the United States. Part of these research funds goes to recruit intellectuals across the world by providing Ohio State University scholarships. Ohio State is a member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, which unites Big Ten Conference schools in research towards medicine, technology, and agriculture.

Alumni have thrived due to the great community and academic environments at Ohio State University. Graduated students have gone on to many different fields, including business, politics, and athletics. The school boasts having graduated Larry Sanger (Wikipedia co-founder), Steve May (CTO at Pixar), and finally athletes Jack Nicklaus (one of the greatest golfers of all-time) and Jesse Owens (commonly regarded as one of the best athletes of all-time). In addition to many professional athletes, alumni have gone on to win an astounding 100 Olympic medals (including 44 Gold medals).
